Donald Dillehay

Donald M. Dillehay, age 90, of Harris, passed away Thursday, September 3, 2015, at Hawkeye Care Center, Spirit Lake. He was born August 17, 1925, in rural Harris to Merwin and Gladys (Morfitt) Dillehay. Donald graduated from Ocheyedan High School in 1943. He enlisted to serve his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1945. Donald was united in marriage to Betty Lowry on March 16, 1949, in Ocheyedan, Iowa. His first love was his family, but a close second was being a farmer. He truly answered God's call; he, together with his wife, Betty and son, Mark took great pride in caring for the land together and shared a strong bond. He had a quick whit and everyone loved his jokes and his easygoing attitude. Don and Betty loved spending time together. They enjoyed many trips to Florida and Colorado, attending ANY farm show and the Clay County Fair together for 60 years. They took great pride in being at all of their granddaughter's activities and ball games, whether home or away you could count on them to be the first ones to arrive. A major highlight for him was his trip with the SW Minnesota Honor Flight in 2010. Don was a member of the Harris United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post in Ocheyedan. Donnie is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty Dillehay of Harris; one son, Mark Dillehay and his wife, Julie of Lake Park; five granddaughters, Katie (Shannon) Serck, Cari (Jarrod) Wallace, Laura (Nick) Fiebig, Leah (Brett) Tigges and Valerie (Harry) Riesberg; six great-grandchildren, Lindsay Serck, Allison, Tyler, and Aubree Wallace, Mikaela Tigges, and Trevor Riesberg; sisters, Marjorie Miquelon of Colorado, and Marilyn (Douglas) Jones of Spearfish, SD. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dale and Raymond; and brother-in-law John Miquelon. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, September 9, 2015, at the United Methodist Church in Harris. Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Harris. Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 2:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., with the family present from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the Schuchert-Lentz Funeral Home.
