Roger Floyd Gilbert

Roger Floyd Gilbert, 76, of Hartford, South Dakota formerly of Spirit Lake passed away Friday, November 3 at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 8 at 2:00 PM at the Robinson Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Roger Floyd Gilbert was born October 11, 1947, to Floyd and Jean (Inbody) Gilbert in Spirit Lake. He attended Terril and Spirit Lake schools, graduating from Spirit Lake High School in 1965 and then attended Iowa Lakes Community College and Iowa State University and earned his bachelor’s degree in building engineering in 1969. Wrinderneck Construction was Roger’s first job out of college. Roger then went to work for his father at Gilbert Construction. After working for his father Roger started his own contracting business Gilbert Builders. He was most recently working as a Construction Engineer for Avera until his retirement. Roger was united in marriage to Teena Lloyd in 1967. On January 11, 2003, Roger was united in marriage to Janice Watkins at Grace Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. They lived in Spirit Lake until 2012 when they moved to South Dakota. Roger was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake. He was also a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake and most recently First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD. Roger was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reloading and was a firearms enthusiast. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Janice of Hartford, South Dakota; children Matthew (fiancé Jamie) Gilbert of Sioux City, Connie Gilbert of Ames, Orville Sangl of Sioux Valley, MN, Melissa (Tony) Johnson of South Dakota, Kristine (Mark) Hoss of Spirit Lake; and Julie (Gene) Lamaack of Tendoy, ID; Grandchildren Wiley, Isaiah, Capri, Declan, Greyson, Lainey, Shamrea, Danielle, Ryan, Jason, Sara, Anna, Jesse, and Abrielle; 12 great grandchildren; sisters Fern, Carol, and Gloria. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Teena, stepson Brian, and brothers-in-law Kenny Mitchell and Kerwin Hulbert.
