Delores "Dee" May

February 9, 1928 - March 22, 2015

Delores June May passed away peacefully on March 22, 2015. Dee was born in Estherville, Iowa, on February 9, 1928, proud daughter of Otto and Ruby Schaper. She has two sisters, Lois Lenox of Estherville and Jo Arthur of Greenville. Dee had many cherished memories of a very happy childhood, with many cousins, who were like siblings to her, and she enjoyed reminiscing and sharing their stories. After high school, she worked at Christianson Clothing Store in Estherville and the Emmet County Auditor's Office, until she was married. On March 21, 1947, in the Estherville Presbyterian Church, she married the love of her life, William C. May. After their Chicago honeymoon, they moved to the May family farm, five miles east of Spirit Lake. This would be their only address, which, was affectionately known as "May's Motel" to all their friends and family who visited frequently! To the marriage they both cherished, three children were born and raised happily in a home abundant with love, chores, and fun family adventures. Dee loved being a homemaker, and in 1969, started working at Dickinson County Mutual Insurance office, which she continued for 19 years. She also worked at the Dickinson County Courthouse and both offices enjoyed her scrumptious cakes and cookies! Dee and Bill were active members of the United Methodist Church of Spirit Lake since 1952. Her spiritual gifts were consummated every day as wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, hostess, Sunday school teacher, circle and 4-H leader and so much more.... Dee will be dearly missed by her children: John H. May (wife Nancy), Barbara J. May (grand dog, Bella), Kenneth E. May (wife Bonnie): four grandchildren, Brenda (Randy) Lubenow, Dawn (Shawn) Wiederhoeft, William May, Lindzee May and 6 great-grandchildren, Bailey and Kori Schwichtenberg, Ethan & Emily Lubenow and Cooper and Amelia Wiederhoeft. Virtually, all cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and acquaintance thought of the house at the farm as their home, also, they were ALWAYS welcomed there, with or without reservations! Preceding her in death were her parents; the apple of her eye, her husband Bill, all her brother-in laws; one sister-in-law; and one grandson, Nathan Jon May. A funeral service will be held at 11:00a.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake. Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 4:00p.m. until 6:00p.m. at the Schuchert-Lentz Funeral Home. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery. The Schuchert-Lentz Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
