Irene Mae Tatman

Irene Mae Tatman, age 92, of Spirit Lake, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2015, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. She was born on May 5, 1923, in Superior Township to Albert and Clara (Knutson) Brunsvold. Irene graduated from North Superior High School in 1940, and from Mankato Commercial College in 1942. On September 3, 1944, Irene was united in marriage with Jack Tatman in Ames, Iowa. Prior to her marriage Irene was secretary to one of the leading scientist on the Manhattan Project; later she worked for 20 years as a field organizer for The American Cancer Society in Northwest Iowa. Left to cherish Irene's memory is her husband of nearly 71 years, Jack; two daughters, Marlene (John) Wexler, a retired court reporter of Brooklyn Park, MN, and Connie Fontenot, who was an award winning science teacher in Houston and internationally, of Okoboji; one son, Doren (Julie) Tatman, who is a retired Air Force pilot and a retired Sun Country Airline pilot, of Spirit Lake, five grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter Laura Marie Tatman, a great grandson DeRay Anthony Williams JR, and her two sisters, Gladys and Lillian. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, August 2, 2015, at Union State Line Lutheran Church with visitation at the church beginning at 2:00 PM. Burial will be in the Union State Line Cemetery. Following the burial, a meal will be served at the church. The Schuchert-Lentz Funeral Home is serving the family.
