Phyllis Cook
June 12, 1929 - March 29, 2022
Phyllis Ann Yager Cook, 92, of Littleton, CO, (formerly of Spirit Lake, IA), passed away on March 29, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. Phyllis, born on June 12, 1929, to Ila and Amos Yager, immediately brought joy and laughter into the world. She was the youngest of five children raised on the Yager family farm in Excelsior, IA. Phyllis went on to graduate from Excelsior High School as valedictorian of her class in 1947. She also excelled in music, singing at state vocal contests, and in numerous school musicals; HMS Pinafore being her favorite. Phyllis met and fell in love with Leonard (Lindy) Cook, of Terril, IA, after his return from WWII. They were wed in August of 1947. The two were inseparable from that point on. Phyllis and Lindy were married for 66 years and raised six children. Phyllis was famous for both her baking and quilting. She was fondly known as the, “quilt lady”. Her quilts have lovingly reached across the country, just as her pies, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and brownies were at every school event, party, and picnic. She was also known for her infectious laugh and lighthearted sense of humor. Phyllis was an extremely devoted mother. Family always came first and was above all else to her, a value she instilled in all those around her. Phyllis was a woman of great strength and was passionate about her faith. She and Lindy taught Sunday school for 23 years at the United Methodist Church of Spirit Lake, IA. She also sang in the choir, performed as a church soloist, and was the children’s choir director. The hole left by her absence will be impossible to fill. Phyllis’s favorite Bible verse: “but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31 Phyllis is survived by her six children, eight grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. As we mourn her passing, we also rejoice in her being reunited with her beloved, Lindy. At her request, there will be no memorial service or funeral. Burial will take place in the Fairview Cemetery in Terril, IA. Arrangements are under the direction of the Schuchert-Lentz Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Online condolences may be left at www.spiritlakefuneralhome.com She wished to be remembered and acknowledged as a hardworking and loving mother. We ask that you please consider a donation in memory of Phyllis Cook to her childhood church: Excelsior United Methodist Church, C/O Karen LaCour, Treasurer, 2320 110th Ave, Lake Park, IA 51347.
